It just pays to think out of the box to find a place that might not be on everyone's radar screen and therefore available for your event!

Panic is not an option and you don't have to ... yes, the Statler had the capability to handle large groups but it is not the only place - there are other cool places to go with architecture, ambiance and the ability to handle a crowd.

Downtown has some great options: The Ellicott Square Building, The Transportation Museum (Pierce Arrow), and HOCA (Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation) are all taking clients.

Did you know that the Buffalo Club has stepped up to the plate? They are "honoring" the Statler menu and pricing for people who have been left in the lurch. You don't have to be a member ...

It has also been rumored that the Butler is taking events again - but they are not advertising ... they are also more appropriate for a smaller reception (125 max sit down).

Buffalo is the City of Good Neighbors and the venues that can are really going above and beyond to help out!

Good Luck!

Detailed and Entertained

2010 Bride's Choice Award

Hooray for us! The New York Times features ThursdayStyles and the Home Sections ...

I know that there will be something waiting for me that, for the most part, might be a bit fluffy, but will be a stretch in one way or another. This Thursday did not disappoint as what to my wondering eye did appear but Crystal Renn above the fold!

For those of you who are not familiar with Ms. Renn, she is the, "from a high-fashion standpoint, 'far and away' the most successful model in the plus-size division of Ford Models". Interestingly enough she is a size 12 and is sometimes photoshopped to appear as large as a size 20! Weird but in the land of the photog it is just the obverse of those size 2's being photoshopped to be size 0.

Ralph Lauren and all the other designers who insist upon using the waif have caused a backlash against fashion images of the super thin (photshopped or not) and this has inadvertantly opened the door for more realistic women being involved on the catwalk. BRAVA!

The other day my partner in crime and I were at our local upscale merchandiser in W'Ville - won't name names but it does rhyme with Boney Stalker - and could find very little for a size 12. I personally know that DVF, the maven of femininity, makes a size 12... no where to be found. Tory Burch .. same thing ... her flats were well represented in extended sizes ... just no clothing for those fashionistas who have a life beyond counting every calorie and mets per exercise.

I asked about "extended" sizing and was told that the jeans section had items to fit everybody - and was told that they only carry the clothing is sizes that will sell. P-I-C got some great J Brand Jeans that day but nothing else - she had her eye on a TB dress but the largest size was a medium (they had 2 of those, 1 small and 1 extra-small) ... no DVF wrap dresses but they did have several size small mini shift/caftans ... we were disappointed but as we were leaving P-I-C pointed out that is the way it is there ALWAYS.

We have encountered this "size-ism" all over - in San Diego we stopped in a shop where all the larger sizes were kept in the back and the customer had to ask for them - so, basically the place was stocked with 0-8's - rather discouraging to be thought of as large at a size 10.

Back to Crystal Renn - she has published a memoir entitled " Hungry" - she describes how is it bizarre that normal in the new overweight ...and I have to agree with this - this is something that I and countless others live with every day. Ladies it is just as easy to be miserable at a size 2 than at a 12. I think what is important is that we become vocal about being given options for clothing that is designed well and with us in mind. That being said, it is important to put our money where our mouths are.

Crystal has opted not be make herself crazy and that is something that I aspire to do myself - wouldn't it be fabulous to just love it all? Wouldn't it be great to just see ourselves as beautiful and capable and not be chained to the angst of having a roll or two? I for one will be filling out the feedback cards from now on and let them know that it would be really great to see a size 12, 14 or 16 on the racks ... who knows? If they stock it, maybe Crystal will come!

Wii

Wii Fit Plus ... completely entertaining and another time sink but with fitness perks!

Generally I have been feeling rather pleased with myself for stopping the multi-tasking madness and getting my butt off the office chair and away from the computer but now am feeling especially virtuous ... well, my mind might be feeing virtuous but my body is screaming in agony!

Who would have thought that hula hooping and balance games would kick my butt so badly???!

It is tremendous fun and my fit age is a respectable 38 (!) ... but I still don't know how I feel about the little Wii voice that goes "oh" when I step on the balance board. How about a new you fashion-wise? It doesn't need to take a ton of time or thought to be a fashion success - Let's dress the part shall we?

Today we will takle some pertinent issues - namely UGGS, SWEATS and NORTHFACE JACKETS

Even though the weather is amazingly cold and disgusting in our part of the world (Buffalo NY), I still think that we could dress a bit more on the chic side and less on the UGG side. Now, don't get me wrong, I have UGGS and wear them on a regular basis TO THE HOCKEY RINK. Ladies, there are other boots out there .... DSW is loaded with flat, winter appropriate boots that look a bit more chic than shlubby.

Yesterday at Wegman's, I saw a woman wearing UGGS and sweatpants with a big boot print on her butt. NOT ATTRACTIVE ....It doesn't take any longer to pull on a pair of jeans than a pair of sweats. Now, I know that there are some of us who may have over-indulged during the holidays and the jeans might be a bit snug but ditch the sweats and save them for the GYM or a disgusting winter day spent on the couch watching What Not To Wear re-runs! You never know ...

The Northface jacket is also part of our "uniform" - warm? Absolutely! Stylish? Not so much. You will look so much more put together with a coat that might be sitting in your closet because it is too "nice" to wear every day. What sense does that make? Pull it out of the closet and put it on. Add a nice scarf and you are ready to go. How fabulous!

Shop your closet - you know that there are tons of things buried in there that have not seen the light of day in years - donate them to Goodwill if they are too small, share them with your friends (clothing swap!) or wear them. Cheers to a New Year and some new style in 2010.
